Itching is an unpleasant and irritating sensation that makes you want to scratch. Vulvar itching is common, and every woman experiences itching of the labia regularly. This is normal. However, if the itching is so severe that it causes significant discomfort or persists for a long time, the cause should be investigated.
It is often thought that itching of the labia is caused by a vaginal yeast infection (candida). While this can indeed be the cause, there are also other reasons such as:
- Skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and Lichen Sclerosus
- Irritation from sweat, tight clothing, or personal care products
- Irritation from other genital infections
What can I do myself?
Stop using self-purchased creams and ointments and consult your doctor
- Avoid tight clothing
- Wear light cotton underwear
- Preferably do not use soap. This dries out the skin too much and damages it
- Do not use perfumed sprays or cleaning products
- Use white unscented toilet paper
- Try unscented laundry detergent and do not use fabric softeners
- Do not sleep under too warm a duvet, as heat increases itching
- Do not dry yourself too roughly, patting with a towel is better
- Change bandages regularly
